So we put a liquid into our tanks, but it is called gas? The name is actually suprisingly fitting once the secret to a combustion engine is revealed:
Steps
-
The reaction increases the number of moles of gas present in the chamber.
-
This gas creates an instantaneous increase in pressure because PV=nRT n is increased so either P or V must increase.
-
Then the pressure pushes the piston up creating more volume for the gas lowering the value of V.
-
Pressure stablizes and some gas escapes lowering pressure and the piston drops back down.a title. Click here to edit me
Why is it Called Gas?
Fun With Equations
Pressure=Force/Area
Increase in Pressure increases the force on the piston because Area does not change
Work=Force(Distance)
Substituting
Pressure=Work/(Area x Distance)
So increasing pressure has the ability to work
