Basics:

Combustion engines are a practical application of turning potential energy in chemical bonds into useful work. 

At this point it is important to note that chemical bonds store energy.  

The work done by the chemical reaction then triggers a series of processes to make wheels spin, lawn mower blades rotate, or snowblower blades spin. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

For combustion High pressure gas is utalized to apply a force, chemical energy is transformed into useful mechanical energy. The basic process involves turning a fule (gasoline for the most part) into a gaseous product (carbon dioxide and gaseous H2O) to increase the number of moles of gas present in the system. The chamber is designed to maintain constant pressure. To do this the system increses in volume;  the piston goes up, the turbine turns, etc.
